Recollections from my visual cortex. . .

Ever since a very young age, visual art has always played a central theme to my pastimes and interests. From countless hours spent in my childhood drawing to the slow-burning interest in photography which slowly crept up on me later in life, my adventure into photography most likely began after finding a film SLR on a bus and then grew sporadically with random attempts at pictures by trial and error.  From a slow and intermittent beginning in analogue to small point and shoot cameras with the onset of the age of digital imaging, the ability to render images instantly rather than using the traditional form of pencil and paper slowly took its hold on me.

The motivation for me to shoot something varies enormously – some images are straightforward observations of a scene or moment in time, whereas other shots may be more reactive and revealing of my state of mind or spirit at the moment of the shutter firing. Although I was aware of the importance of subject, context and mood in traditional art, it took a long time for me to realise that the same rules could or should be applied to photographic images - early attempts were just snapshots which I was never quite satisfied with, because I felt there was something missing or not right. Not until I started to try and apply those precepts to images did I begin to create slightly more interesting images!

As my ability to shoot expands, hopefully this will allow deeper elements to show through in each shot. Somewhere within this collection of pictures you may be able to see a hint of the influences which have inspired me. Artists like Gustav Klimt, Edward Hopper or Mark Rothko have given me a better understanding of light and colour, and post-modern artforms such as graphic design or street art have helped me to comprehend things like composition. Ultimately though, capturing the details, patterns and scenes that underly the journey through life are the forces which drive my motivation. On an incredible ride like this, stopping the world for a few moments to document it is vital...
